Muurhuizen (Wall Houses) in Amersfoort, Netherlands

If you want to feel a medieval vibe while walking only a few minutes from the city center? Take a stroll through the Muurhuizen street. This is unlike other places in the Netherlands, it's a really quiet street, almost without cars. Do keep in mind it's a residential place, and people still live here. A little bit of history: Around 1380, a booming economy forced Amersfoort to expand and construct a new outer city wall. The original wall was dismantles, and from 1500, residents began building houses directly themselves along its old foundation, using the salvaged stone and brick. Because these homes were constructed overal several hundred years, the houses are a mix of different architectural styles. Some highlights: Muurhuizen 19: De Bollenburgh - Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (1547-1619) has lived here during his childhood years Muurhuizen 5-7: It has a 1645 gable stone depicting the house as it would have looked back then. Muurhuizen 97: Dieventoren - It is a tall square tower that once served as part of the city’s defenses and functioned as a prison until the 19th century. Muurhuizen 177: Theehuisje - You can see this little teahouse if you walk around Blauwebruggang.
