New Jalen Hurts update is horrific news for Eagles

Hurts was ruled out of the Eagles game vs. the Panthers due to the blood clots, with the QB being admitted to the hospital over the weekend for further tests. Imaging revealed the worst: the blood clots had traveled, with several now being found in his lungs. This altered the path of treatment from “rest and management” to needing to immediately address the clots aggressively. The treatment plan is fairly rudimentary: A regimen of blood thinners and monitoring, and it’s expected he will have no lasting effects. However, there is significant risk for the condition to worsen if Hurts takes part in strenuous athletic activity. A statement from Hurts’ agent on Monday went on to further explain the situation. pic.twitter.com/aInIuUYiQJ — Nicole Lynn (@AgentNicoleLynn) October 19, 2026 This new diagnosis is raising major questions about the Eagles’ actions leading up to their game in London in Week 5. Ian Rapoport reports that Hurts was in the hospital for monitoring the night before the game against the Jaguars, and was forced to stay awake all night because sleep was deemed too risky due to the clots. This led to Hurts not sleeping the night before the game, then suiting up and playing. Why the Eagles allowed this to happen with their starting QB is of significant concern. How he was allowed to fly to England in the first place warrants a discussion. What occurred to allow him to fly back to Philadelphia, knowing he was battling blood clots, adds another layer to this whole situation. It’s now at a point where there needs to be an NFL investigation into the decision-making process that led to Hurts taking the field less than 12 hrs after being in the hospital for a potentially life-threatening condition. The football side of this isn’t nearly as important, but the Eagles season was already in trouble, and this could be the nail in the coffin. Backup QB Tanner McKee was clearly out of his depth against Carolina on Sunday, managing to get only 215 yards through the air on 47 attempts, despite playing against a patchwork Panthers secondary that was without both of its starting cornerbacks. Sitting at 2-4, there’s still room to make the postseason in the hapless NFC East this year, but any dream of making a significant Super Bowl run, or even competing deep in the playoffs are functionally dead.
