St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, New York
Initially conceived by and built to serve the Irish community of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, this striking Catholic Church was completed in 1905. When completed, and for decades thereafter, it stood as the second-tallest structure in Brooklyn, behind the Williamsburg Savings Bank, located in Downtown Brooklyn. The building was designed by Raymond F. Almirall, a prominent architect who trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He selected decorative elements created by Tiffany Glass. The church dome has served as an informal beacon for ships navigating New York Harbor. Within Sunset Park, Parents and grandparents tell neighborhood children that if they ever got lost, they should look for the spire of St. Michael's and walk toward it to find their way home.
