Üç Haclı Kilise in Çavuşin, Turkey

In the red valley, one can find Üç Haclı Kilise, also known as Three Crosses church. It is carved directly into the rock. Though heavily eroded, it is thought that the church housed a monastic community. The church contains some beautiful frescoes, which were painted in the tenth century, though the church structure itself may have been carved as early as the AD 600s. The frescoes show Jesus as ruler of the world, as well as his baptism. There are also religious carvings in the ceiling, such as large Latin crosses. The church is only accessible by hiking through the red valley. One must climb a slightly precarious wooden ladder to access the frescoes in the cave rooms. The church is located next to a juice bar providing much needed refreshment.
