How blood vessels distinguish between growth and inflammation
The angiopoietin-Tie signaling pathway has long been known to be essential for the maturation and maintenance of healthy blood vessels. It stabilizes the vessel wall and regulates vascular growth during development. At the same time, it plays an important role in inflammation, when blood vessels become activated and immune cells leave the bloodstream and enter the surrounding tissue. How the same signaling pathway can control such different biological functions has remained unclear.
