Lymphatic vessels act as the body's "drainage system," collecting excess fluid from tissues. When lymphatic drainage is impaired because lymphatic vessels are underdeveloped, damaged or dysfunctional, lymphedema can develop, causing swelling, particularly in the arms and legs.
