Hood River Pumping Station and Pipeline Trail in Hood River, Oregon
This is a place with two unique and magical places to see. The first, the abandoned Hood River Pumping Station, is at the parking lot to the Hood River Pipeline Trail. It is a decommissioned hydroelectric facility that used to supply electricity to Hood River, Oregon from 1923 until 2006. It was shut down after a 2006 flood destroyed the dam upstream. The pumping station building is still open and is now a graffiti-covered ruin with smashed windows, broken glass everywhere, and a few openings in the floor. The site is popular with urban explorers. The pumping station is the trailhead for the Hood River Pipeline Trail. The trail is about 3 miles in total length (out-and-back) that first follows a trail and railroad tracks and eventually to a catwalk that takes you over the Hood River! Then it gets even better as the catwalk "climbs" into the trees and becomes an elevated walk through the trees next to the river. Old and abandoned pipe and pipe structures are along the trail and many have great graffiti.
