Trump threatens EU with tariffs over 'laughable' Canada association plan

US President Donald Trump has threatened steep tariffs on the European Union if it goes ahead with a proposal to make Canada its first "associate member", a move he described as a possible "hostile act". Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is due to address the European Parliament on Thursday, has been pursuing closer ties with the EU as he seeks to pivot away from the US.
