Former NYC Deputy Mayor on Remembering 9/11

Edward Skyler reflects on the aftermath of 9/11, saying it was extremely difficult to make decisions in the wake of a tragedy that left 2,700 people murdered and the city filled with grief, anxiety, and political tension. He recalls that when Mayor Bloomberg was sworn in on 01/01/2002, smoke was still rising from the World Trade Center site and the economic damage had already been done. Skyler says the period was marked by intense emotions and strong voices from people opposed to New York, and that the job of city leaders was to listen to all sides and develop a plan that served the city’s best interests, even if it disappointed some people.
