The US Army's Patriot surface-to-air missile system has emerged as a cornerstone of its air defense operations in recent years, protecting American forces and allies from missile and drone threats. Getting one of the most in-demand air defense systems into position in a crisis is a massive logistical undertaking, but Army officers involved in past Patriot deployments told Business Insider that the US military can fly the crews, launchers, radars, and interceptors off to whatever hot spot needs them in just a matter of days. Deploying a Patriot battery in an emergency situation means soldiers may be sent with little warning, often with no clear sense of when they will return. These abrupt departures can be difficult for soldiers and their families. "Ultimately, we're first responders," said Capt. Morgan Lloyd, a Patriot battery commander. "We needed to go, so we went," he said of a past deployment. "Soldiers were proud to do it." Deployments have differed in destination, but the Army officers Business Insider spoke with said the process was remarkably similar in execution. The calls came with little warning, triggering a scramble. Days later, though, the Patriots were in position, ready to defend the skies against airborne threats — everything from crewed planes to missiles to drones. He was stationed in Germany when the call came in on a Wednesday evening informing him that he needed to head out. That started the clock on a 48-hour rush to determine who was going — he could take just 80 soldiers and only the equipment that was absolutely necessary — and then get them through deployment processing and aboard a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport plane that would take them where they were needed. During those first two days, soldiers completed medical, legal, and administrative readiness procedures, including sorting wills, life insurance, official photos, and last-minute health checks to ensure they could deploy. At the battalion headquarters, commanders connected with host countries so political leaders knew the Army was coming. Meanwhile, troops and equipment went through final checks. The same rapid sequence plays out across Patriot deployments. "The next thing you know, you just see streams of C-17s coming in — just flooding in — loading equipment," said Lt. Col. C.S. Craig, a Patriot battalion commander, who shared details of a 2022 deployment after Russia's invasion. That deployment, he said, saw roughly 20 C-17s fly around the clock between Germany and Poland to move the soldiers needed for half a battalion, or two batteries. A Patriot battery typically consists of six mobile launch vehicles that fire interceptors, such as the popular PAC-3 missile, along with radars, a command-and-control suite, and various support equipment to sustain operations. Craig called the C-17 flight the "fun part" for soldiers. He said that the feeling of being crammed into the plane, loaded with heavy equipment held down by chains, is like having "game-day butterflies in your stomach." A burden for soldiers and families Before soldiers deploy, there is often a sense of uncertainty. For his deployment, Lloyd recalled, there was no set mission end date. The instructions his battery received were simple: "This needs to be defended; go out there now." This quickly posed a logistical challenge. Since the mission duration was unclear, Lloyd had to ensure that the soldiers he selected had enough time before they returned to the US for their next assignment. And that was just one consideration of many. The broader uncertainty and the understanding that air defense is a dangerous undertaking aren't felt only by the soldiers. "On the families, it's hard," Lloyd said. "I had a six-month-old son at home — didn't know if or when I'd see him again." He said that saying goodbye to his family was emotional. He recalled how two soldiers had leave approved so they could get engaged. "They had the rings, and they told me about their plans and were all excited. Craig, who oversaw one such send-off, told Business Insider about talking with the soldiers and their families. "I'm telling them: 'Your loved ones are leaving. I can't tell you where they're going, and I don't know when they're going to come back.' And that's tough," he said. 'A lot of this is without sleep' When Patriot batteries deploy in a crisis, the process sometimes occurs so fast that the soldiers don't know exactly where their C-17s will land within a host country. This forces soldiers and their commanders to solve problems on the fly. "We moved so fast in Poland that we didn't have anywhere to go," Craig said, adding that the Army arrived at an airfield with many details still to be figured out. He said sometimes, "we're moving faster than the political levels can catch up," reflecting the urgency behind some of these snap deployments. "It's a complex operation that has a lot of moving parts," he said. For Lloyd's deployment, his battery received its orders on a Wednesday night, and by Saturday afternoon, the first C-17 was on the ground in the host country. The system's launchers were ready for action by Monday. From first notification, "to the time you're ready to put birds in the air, you're looking at about 96 to 120 hours. And a lot of this is without sleep," Craig said. Soldiers and commanders sometimes have to solve problems on the fly. US Army photo Lloyd said the constant communication with higher headquarters throughout the process made it feel "like the moon landing." Then came the waiting. Between maintaining the Patriot systems and monitoring intelligence for signs of an incoming attack, crews fill the downtime with books, card games, board games like Monopoly, and video games on devices like the Nintendo Switch. Lloyd said that in a way, US air defenders "look forward to airstrikes because it's like: here comes the pitch." He said they're fully confident they can knock down whatever comes their way. Eventually, the deployment comes to an end, bringing with it nearly the same unpredictability as the start. For instance, Lloyd said he didn't know when his battery was going home until it actually happened. Soldiers couldn't tell their families either. Lloyd said that the first time his wife knew he was coming home was when he was back in Germany. Despite the stress, challenges, uncertainty, risk, and personal strains that come with surprise deployments, Lloyd said his soldiers were more than eager to answer the call.
