Nearly 1.7 million deaths linked to second-hand smoke in 2023, study finds

2.7 billion people breathing someone else's smoke, and the fix on offer is still just 'don't.'

More than 2.7 billion people worldwide, including 767 million children, were exposed to second-hand smoke in 2023, contributing to nearly 1.7 million deaths, a Lancet study said on Tuesday. Researchers found second-hand smoke remained a major global health risk, with no safe level of exposure.
