Mitochondrial DNA mutations may help turn aging hearts toward failure
Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have shown that mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which accumulate in many tissues as we age, can actively contribute to impaired heart function. Until now, it has been difficult to determine whether these mutations are a cause of age-related heart dysfunction or simply a consequence of aging.
