Divergent molecular mechanisms for fungal plant biomass conversion

Fungi are major degraders of plant biomass, including leaves, stems and roots. Investigating the molecular mechanisms that control this process is essential for identifying ways to degrade and use lignocellulose, a recalcitrant waste-product residue from biofeedstocks and agricultural residues, and accelerate the development of biotechnology. It is also essential for deepening understanding of the ecological role of fungi in the global carbon cycle.
