I commend you on your fortitude, tenacity and downright good looks. Like D/STs, kickers are tough to project, as teams rather score touchdowns than kick field goals. There are some kickers who do have a leg up on the competition though. If your kicker can hit 50+ yard field goals with some regularity, they will get used more often than those that can’t. If teams can score points instead of punting, they’ll take that shot. Last season there were seven kickers who hit eight or more 50+ yard field goals. But, there’s one kicker who stands out, and his name is Brandon Aubrey. He holds the record for most 60+ yard field goals and led the league with 11 50+ yarders last season. He is truly a unicorn in that regard. When to draft Brandon Aubrey? Yes, you want to wait on kicker in your draft, but I would like to grab a kicker with a big leg if possible. The real question is if you should try to snag Aubrey early or not. Looking at his ADP across sites isn’t much help, as it is all over the map. He’s of course the first kicker taken, but much depends on your league settings. Do you get 6 points for a 60 yard field goal? Are there bonuses for 50+ yarders? How many starters do you play? If you start eight compared to 10+, the kicker slot takes up a bigger percentage of your total fantasy points for the week. If that is spread out more, then it’s harder for a kicker to make a significant impact week in and week out. I see no reason to reach for Aubrey unless your setup is very kicker friendly, but I also see no reason to draft him along with the rest of the riff-raff. Grab him a round or two earlier than you would if somehow he falls late. He can win you a couple weeks, while consistently giving you a good average. Overall, we want kickers on strong offenses, as teams are more likely to kick field goals if they have a lead. Domes help of course. And unless you have Aubrey or a kicker that is just scorching hot, don’t be afraid to drop your guy for an up and coming offense or strong matchup.
