Mountains may offer climate refugia for one of North America's most imperiled turtles

As climate warming pushes many species toward cooler environments, high-elevation areas are expected to play an increasingly important role in biodiversity conservation. A new study by the Great Hollow Nature Preserve & Ecological Research Center (New Fairfield, Connecticut) suggests that streams in New York's Catskill Mountains and other mountain ranges of the northeastern U.S. could become important refugia for one of the region's most imperiled freshwater turtles, the wood turtle (Glyptemys insculpta).
