Both players were injured in Friday’s Tempo game against the Portland Fire; Sykes suffered a left foot injury, while Morrow sustained a left knee injury. Neither will need surgery, but both players will be out for the rest of the year. Despite the injuries, head coach Sandy Brondello said that the WNBA informed them they are not eligible for a hardship player at this point, per TSN beat reporter Chelsea Leite. Brittney Sykes, Aneesah Morrow were both key contributors before injury Coming off of her first career All-Star appearance last year, Sykes averaged 18.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.2 steals through 17 games this season. But she suffered multiple foot injuries that held her out of most of the season after posting career-best numbers to start the year. Morrow, meanwhile, was traded from the Connecticut Sun to the Tempo on July 31st, and has thrived since arriving in Toronto. Morrow averaged 9.3 points and 6.6 rebounds in 19.4 minutes across 7 games as a Tempo before getting hurt in Friday’s game. The Tempo are 11-25 so far in their inaugural season. In the same game that they lost Sykes and Morrow for the season, they snapped a 12-game losing streak with an 82-79 win. The Tempo have been led by Marina Mabrey, who was named an All-Star for the first time after averaging 20.8 points and 3.7 assists per game. Nyara Sabally (12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds per game), Isabelle Harrison (12 points, 6 rebounds), Kiki Rice (12 points, 3.7 rebounds) and Laura Juskaite (10 points, 3 rebounds) have also all been key contributors. But injuries to key players have plagued the team all season long; Sabally and Harrison have each missed 12 games, Rice has missed 16, and Sykes has missed 19. As such, despite a 9-9 start to the season, the Tempo now find themselves with the WNBA’s third-worst record.
